Sega's story began in the 1940s, but it was in the 1980s that the brand carved out a niche in the video game world with its popular arcade machines and the Master System console. The real breakthrough came with the Genesis (or Mega Drive), which offered a bold alternative to Nintendo and propelled Sonic the Hedgehog as the mascot of a new generation. Sega adopted a more aggressive, "cool" tone, which appealed to many gamers. The Saturn and Dreamcast followed with innovations ahead of their time, but struggled to compete with the competition. Despite abandoning the console market, Sega remains a cult icon thanks to its legendary franchises like Sonic, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage, Shenmue, and many others, which are still very much alive on all modern platforms.
